Does Your Morning Coffee Really Cause Cancer

Does a cancer risk lurk in your morning cup of coffee? Many coffee addicts are skeptical about a California judge's recent ruling requiring cancer warnings on coffee purchased within the state.  The ruling came after an eight-year legal struggle by the Council for Education and Research on Toxics. The not-for-profit  took the coffee industry to court under a California law that requires warnings if chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects are present. Coffee-roasting creates a chemical byproduct called acrylamide that's a carcinogen; it's found in many foods that are cooked. CERT fought a similar legal battle over potato chips several years ago, and the industry agreed to remove the chemical.  Many coffee and healthcare professionals, oppose the court's...

Coffee Naps Might Be The Secret To More Energy

Have you heard of coffee naps?  It could change your life. A coffee nap is exactly what it sounds like: You drink a cup of coffee, then immediately take a nap. Coffee Got Complicated: Know Your Natural From Your Washed From Your Honey

Coffee is getting complicated. And I don’t mean understanding the difference between an American cappuccino (obnoxiously oversized like a bowl of fettuccine Alfredo from Cheesecake Factory) and the daintier original invented by the Italians (who are generally horrified by both our bastardization and willingness to drink one at any time of day.) But I digress. Consider the term “green coffee.” Even the hue of standard commodity beans — the second most heavily traded commodity in the world after crude oil –- can be several shades removed. Referring to the color of beans before roasting, green coffee can range from dark raisin to dried chickpea, and the taste profiles, for those attuned to them, can also be wildly different. This...
